When thinking and planning for the year, obviously IBOT features pretty high on my bloggy priorities. Whilst I would love for this linky to grow in numbers, what I would love even more is for it to grow in community. For us to get to know each other, and enjoy and respect each others places in the webby world.

With this in mind, here are my tips for getting the most out of a link up.

Try and get in early. It’s not always possible, but when you can, write your post the day before, so that all you need to do is link it on the day. Posts that appear a lot later than others tend to get less hits, as some bloggers link, and then choose to start reading and commenting straight away.

Visit the other blogs and see who is commenting the most, and make sure you visit their blog. They are probably more likely to return the favour, and if you can form a relationship with that person via comments, you may have a commenter for life.

Make commenting easy for people. Captcha’s are great for catching spam, but they are also a comment deterrent. If you are spammed, you can always delete it.

Comment on others blogs. It sounds easy but it is soooo important. In a small linky, with a reoccurring crowd, people soon learn who is posting and running, and that leaves a sour taste. Call it Karma, or just sowing what you reap, but if you want to get comments, give comments.

Have a catchy title. In a big link list, you need to be able to stand out from the others. What is drawing people to your blog?

Seize the opportunity to find new blogs. It can be easy to just stick with the ones you know and like, and let’s face it, you would probably have read those ones anyway, so it’s no extra work. Why not try and find new people to read? You might find new friends, or a new favourite, and you will be getting yourself out there.

When visiting, choose to follow via GFC, networked blogs, face book or twitter. We bloggers notice new people, and look to see who they are. We are more inclined to visit back a new follower. And there is nothing wrong with leaving that in the comments. ‘Loved this post.I’m following you now.’

Pick a number of blogs to comment and stick to it. I choose to read at least 10% of entries, or five at minimum, depending on which is highest. You don’t need to read every entry, but you should make an effort to read some.

Choose entries in a fun way. Read the first three that appear after yours, and the two before. Or random.Org which ones to read. Choose a word and then read the first blog that starts with the letters of the word; whatever you do, make it interesting. It doesn’t have to be a chore.

Open three posts at a time. This saves you time in the host page reloading, and it makes it quicker to read. It’s very achievable to read three posts at a time, and once you have done that a few times, you realise you have actually read nine, or twelve, or fifteen.

We have all had people say they can’t comment cause they are on their iPhone, and there is some truth to that. It’s harder but not impossible. If you really can’t do it, engage via Faceboook or twitter instead. Let the person know you have read and enjoyed it. Or come back and comment later when you have a chance.

Let’s face it, some posts there isn’t much to say, but you don’t need to write an essay. A simple, ‘I never knew that, Thankyou,’ might be all you can manage, but it means something to the author.

If you can’t read, don’t link. It’s that simple. We all have busy weeks where we can’t give as much as we would like, and life happens, but maybe today is not the best day to join in. There is nothing wrong with saying I can’t do this today. No one will think any less of you.

Follow the rules. If there is a theme, stick to it. A thankful Thursday post needs to be thankful. Things I know should be things you know. And Wordless Wednesday should not include an essay. People switch off if you just randomly link any old post, cause that is what is open, and it doesn’t win you any friends.

Make the most of Social Media. A host will often retweet your post link if you @ them so they know you are there. And hosting is a lot of work. A simple thanks, or Facebook mention goes a long way.

Comment on the hosts post. They have gone to the effort to set the link up, and if they are a good host, will make the effort to read and comment on your blog. It’s good to show the love back.

Don’t be a troll. It might sound obvious, but if you leave a nasty comment, others will read it, and will think less of you. If you don’t agree with a topic that’s fine. Pick something insignificant to comment on, or just leave. ‘If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all,’ applies to blogging as well.

Leave your preconceived ideas behind. I never used to watch vlogs, now I love them. A review or a giveaway may actually be of interest to you, even if you have read three for the same product. Someone who may not have interested you before, may have written something brilliant today.

Remember the blogging world can be brutal, but it can also be beautiful.
But it’s always what you make it.

  1. I still don’t watch vlogs :) Mostly because I surf via iphone and it uses too much bandwidth to watch video, plus when I’m out I don’t like to play things with sound which can interrupt others.

Wise suggestion to try and comment via facebook / twitter when using the iphone.

I usually blog on Tuesdays and started noticing your link up on other blogs, so will hopefully join in from now on :)

  4. Too true Jess. I have been guilty of linking and running once or twice, but usually I try to get around at least 5 or 6 blogs. Maybe I need to broaden my scope a bit – I do tend to go to the same ones often! I love you ideas about choosing a word etc.

    • I think we all have days where we link and run. Often unintentionally, cause things happen and that’s to be expected and is fine. I know that usually you do a great job :)
I think a lot of newbies have no idea, and even some of us oldies forget, which was the it of the post.
Plus IBOT was started with the idea of getting people to read each others posts, not just make me look like I have great stats one day a week. It’s good to remind others (and myself!) of that from time to time.

  5. Excellent post Jess – I am going to share it on my page later today as I have tried to explain my simplify your life linky as there are a lot of people new to linky stuff or who don’t comment around. I asked people to comment on at least 2 others (hoping for commenting on 5 or at least on those that comment on your own post) but often people don’t even do that. As host i try to read all and as a participant i read as many as possible with a minimum of 5 as my aim. Some weeks are busier than others but if i know i won’t be able comment at all then i don’t link up.

My tip – (you really covered it all) – commit to a number of blog posts you will read and just do it – open 5 posts in new window and just read them in 1 hit if you know you will not be back later. or say you will read the last 5 entries towards the end of the day so those later linkers get some comment love too!

    • One of the reasons why I haven’t joined your simplify your linky is because I know that I will feel the need to read everyone’s, and that won’t be simplifying anything!
It’s hard I think, when there are so many linking opportunities to not get caught up in joining them all, but unfortunately we can’t do everything.

I like that idea about committing. That’s what I do. It’s either five or ten percent (cause anything over 50 gets a bit big to get around to.) Most times I get through more because when you open multiple windows at a time it is a lot easier to get through.

  6. I usually link in the morning and read at night so I get a bigger list to read. The only problem is I do it from my ipad and commenting can be a bit harder especially with captcha. Some blogs are easy to comment on, others not so much. Great tips and thanks for having us Jess ;)

  7. Very comprehensive post. I think I have told you how I believe IBOT helped solidify my main community in the blogosphere. I realise, over the many months of IBOT that there is a core who visit me, and I them. I know we all don’t like cliques and exclusivity so I do try and get out to different people when I can. After all, I was a nobody when I started and if no one had given me a look in, I’d still be riting a “private” public blog! If only we were not all so limited by the tick-tock of the clock.

    • Yes, that annoying clock gets us everytime!

You have mentioned that before, and it always makes me smile to think of it. So much of my blogging community is from IBOT too, and item excited when we have new people join, because know how great Tuesday bloggers are. For the most part they are great readers and commenters, and I think that is awesome.

  8. Hi Jess, you’ve got some great informative tips there! I’ts been a bit of trial and error figuring those things out for my self over the past few months. #IBOT was the first link-up I ever tried…I was so relieved with your friendly response to my DM inquiry and said I could join! #IBOT has really opened my eyes to the world of bloggers out there and I am so grateful for it. 9. Great LINKY tips Jess :) I host a Wordless Wednesday party too and try to go through as many as I can on Wed, and more on Thur. I do get turned off when people link non-WW posts {I don’t mind words in WW posts but I mean other day posts} or giveaways.

Thanks for hosting this every week. You know I love the community here and come bk even when I’ve no IBOT post haha

I’ll have to make an effort next time I’ve got some awesome pics to showcase. :)

  21. Those who post and run aren’t playing fair. It’s not about the number of comments you generate, but the connections made within the community. I’ve been flat out, so have found it better to keep quiet and not link up rather than commit to something I can’t do well.

I love discovering new blogs, so always try to read as many linkups as I can.

Have not done any link ups apart from simplify your life and have madeira myself a rule to read and comment on at least a few each week, choosing different ones each time so it is reassuring to read your post and know that I am at least getting that right.
I love the sense of community when visiting a blog and reading the comments especially when the poster is involved in replies, I often don’t return when I see a blogger never reply to their comments, I understand that they can’t always reply to all but some at the very least. 30. Well said. I am very grateful for hosts such as yourself because those of us who don’t blog very frequently are at risk of getting completely lost and forgotten in the big wide blogging world, without linky’s to help us out! As for commenting, sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. I used to feel very guilty if I didn’t comment much but now I am much more relaxed about blogging and although I usually try to comment back when I’m left a comment, I mostly only comment if I genuinely want to, and of course my comments are always nice :) There are so many amazing blogs out there and linky’s help me find them!
