I don’t usually post on Wednesdays, on account of it being my book day and all, but my Wednesday plans have been blown away with the nonexistent cyclone that cancelled school for the day.
Being that the news in the southern states on such affairs is rather dramatic, I thought I would give you the info myself.

It’s raining here in Brisvegas.

Some thing different hey? ;p
Oh how I miss the NT storms. They are pathetic here. But it’s true, everyone goes nuts about them and it’s hard not to get caught up in the hype and the worry a bit when the media is acting like it’s the end of the world because we’re going to have a storm and a bit of rain. I think the floods last year have really freaked people out, and as you said, Yasi didn’t help matters. Plus the Aus Day Kath floods sucked and I tend to err on the side of caution now when it comes to that, especially as it was my Dad who was part of the team who drew up the flood plans for the area and his famous last words were “Nah, it’s not going to get that high”.
Funny you mentioned African Mahoganies too as I was just googling them yesterday. We had two in our yard in Katherine. I believe they got chopped down after we left though, they were starting to get diseased. Never had one drop a branch though, our issues were more to do with lightning strikes.

They pulled all the African mahoganies out of the trees up here because a boy died at school one day after one dropped a branch, and it fell on his head. They are beautiful trees, but because of all the rain their roots are only shallow, and so they are very top heavy.
I can understand why down south the mention of torrential rain is terrifying; it’s just so completely different for us.

Wow, had no idea there was a death from one dropping a branch, that’s incredibly sad.

Glad you guys are all well and safe.
I agree, news writers are huge drama queens.

Yes and after the cyclones in QLD in recent times too, they tend to be even more so!

Man, why NT News hasn’t hired you yet I don’t know! Surely you could be a morning show correspondent up there, telling us all down here how it is!
LOVE that the kids are out running around in their swimmers in the rain!

I shall ring the Today show and pass on your recommendations. That way you can see my smiling face and half dressed children every morning!

I was going to point out that you missed a few cyclones. Like Max in 1981. Though he passed through town, relatively uneventfully (possibly because nothing had really grown back since Tracy). However then I remember the spring chicken that you are! There was also Gretel in ’85 who was slightly more exciting. Quite a few trees came down. But again probably a little to early for you to remember

Ha ha! Yes Max was before my time, and I have no recollection of Greta at all. I wonder if we were away at the time….
